Straight From Dr. Z:

This will be a casual, conversation if you will, for this Application Note. Warranties are fact of life necessities. Although I hope that all of my amp run perfectly for there entire lifetime, sometimes issues do arise where support for your amp is needed. In the Electronic field we have a term for early failing components; it is"Infant Mortality." I know it's a bit graphic of a term. But, let me explain, electronic parts are built to last 40 and 50 years if installed in properly designed circuits. Their failure rate is its highest percentage during the first 5 or 10 hours of use, after that their lifespan is measured in decades.

The most important time of a handmade tube amps life is in its initial use. Make sure that when you order an amp to be shipped to you that you request the amp be play tested prior to packing the amp. This procedure starts the warranty and should be noted on the Warranty Sheet that is supplied with each new amp sold. For claims purposes alone, I need to know if the damage came from factory to dealer, or dealer to customer. At DR.Z amps we use original Sealed Air foam packing system, and is the approved method of packing from both FedEx, and UPS.

Your dealer should be your first call, and if the amp was play tested they can recommend initial settings, or answer any other question you may have about the performance of your new Z-Amp. Make sure that you check the obvious details first: if the box looks badly damaged, has punctures in the cardboard, or if you hear broken glass sounds emitting from the box as it's schlepped by a delivery person, REFUSE the delivery. This will expedite the repair or replacement of a damaged amp by weeks.

As for initial tone settings, most of the tone stacks used in the Z-Amps are quite unique, so standard setting as ones used on, say, Fender style amps may not yield the full capability of the Z's. Experiment let your ears tell you were the knob should be set, and listen for the interaction as adjustments are made. This is where a dealer's experienced input can help you dial in the best tone from your new Z.
