A recognizable
name in the line up of Dr Z Amps is back. The Mazerati GT may look
familiar, but you are in for a whole new ride. Our goal with this
design is to provide you the simplest platform to achieve that elusive
“boutique” high gain tone. The GT uses the time tested
output transformer designed for us by Ken Fischer. The gain comes
on fast and strong allowing you to simply use the volume knob on
your guitar to provide sparkling clean tones.

The Mazerati GT utilizes two 12AX7s, a quad of EL84s, and a 5AR4
rectifier. The GT is cathode biased so output tube changes are a
breeze.

Usually with most new amps i get there is the initial impression's
& euphoria, and gushing about the amp, ... then a period of
what I'll call reality checks. Thats where i start identifying those
little niggles and wish lists, which ultimately leads to me determine
that " well, ... it's pretty close, " and down the road
i go. BUT ..... with this amp i tried to reserve a little judgment
and just wait and see a little longer than usual. Well i can say
now that i do believe this is the amp ive been waiting 46 years
for! Ok, so ive been playing for 30 ish, anyway you get the idea!
WOW, it just seems to sound better every time i come back to it.
I continue to learn how to use it with my Tele, which ive settled
on as the best sounding with it, and my Strat a close second.
My initial take on it
was that i might tone it down a tiny bit with some pre tube swaps,
but the more i play it the more i dig it box stock! Just a little
off the guitar volume & tone knobs and it is right there!!!
Then it is just amazing when you roll on the full volume, ... it
just comes alive in this PHAT SUSTAINING BLOOM, with all the aggression
of a pissed wolverine, and then back to this sweet clean beautiful
tone! I roll back the tone on the Tele a little more and it's doing
this incredible Robben Ford-y tone. I hate to say it but i havent
even plugged in an OD yet! It's that good on it's own. many many
players could use just guitar into amp all night. Also It is the
most Airbrake friendly amp ive paired it to! The GT is very likely
the loudest amp i own, and the brake will be essential for various
clubs and enviroments with it. Here at home i found that the amp
is so loud that late evenings i need to put the brake way down at
bedroom settings. To my great pleasure, the GT sounded fantastic!!
Again i roll off the guitar volume just a little, .... not to lower
the volume per say but to clean up some of the Excess compression
and gain that you get when squashing the signal so at bedroom settings.
At that point it gives me this way cool studio/practice level tone
that is super touch sensitive, but still punchy and articulate!
I run my guitar thru a Room-mate reverb pedal and it is stunning!!!
I think that the amp is so simple and pure of circuit that the Airbrake
sounds even more transparent than ever!

Somehow Dr. Z
has given us all this gain with clarity, complexity, and most importantly,
feel. Some non-master volume amps are hard to play at (relatively)
low volumes, when there’s no power tube compression or sustain
happening. Not the GT- the feel even with the volume control just
above 9:00 the feel is unreal. I’m a big “feel”
guy; frequency response is one thing but how an amp “feels”
to the player is just as, or even more important, in my opinion.
Doctor Z is a master of getting an amp to feel tight in just the
right places, loose in just the right places, and “broken
in” right out of the box. It’s like your brain is hard
wired to the output tubes- pick harder for dirty, lighter for clean-
but it’s not “touchy” or difficult to play. The
first tune that came into my head as I was playing was the intro
to “Don’t Take Me Alive” by Steely Dan. Now I
can finally get those Larry Carlton dynamics!
I’m a
huge fan of “minimal circuit path” amps. I bought my
first Z back in 1998 when I heard that Dr. Z was going to make an
amp with KT66’s and only a volume, treble, and bass controls,
and I immediately pre-ordered one. I instantly loved the Route 66,
and Doc’s amps just keep getting better and better. Without
going into my experiences in the last 25+ years of guitar playing,
amp teching/building, and tone mongering, I’ll just say that
I’ve heard (and owned ) a *lot* of amps but only once before
has an amp come along that made my jaw hit the floor like the GT
(my Stingray). Like Stu said on his web site, “It’s
the Real Deal”.
